Russian Digital Libraries Journal (RDLJ) is the first Russian electronic journal to present up-to-date reflection of research on and use of digital libraries – distributed information systems for creation, storage, analysis, distribution, search and retrieval in various collections of digital documents (text, image, audio, video etc.) via the global networks.

Digital libraries constitute a field of research and development aiming to promote the theory and practice of processing, distribution, storage, retrieval and analysis of digital objects of a different nature. Along with the usual traditional library text and multimedia digital objects, such systems also include structured data with a variety of digital objects is very different nature and with metadata that describes them. Management problems are so diverse information resources and meet the growing diversity of the needs of users in such systems require the use of many advanced technologies used in modern information systems. Such technologies are developing in the field of Semantic Web, science-intensive data, large data (Big Data), to ensure interoperability of systems, parallel processing, data integration in a rapidly growing diversity and volume of data. The central place in discussions in the community of electronic libraries gradually take innovative technologies to facilitate the exchange of information with rich semantics.

Development of digital libraries technologies is becoming more and more essential for raising standards of science, economics, education, health and quality of life in general. Scientific electronic library plays an important role in the scientific community actively supports open access to the results of research initiatives in the formation of open science. Intensively developing in different countries work on the preservation of digital information concerning the Earth, Universe, Science, Literature, Art, Environment, Human, contributes to the formation of global information repositories and data.

RDLJ aimed at the formation and expansion of the Russian community of scientists, developing scientific field, as described above.

RDLJ was founded in 1997 by the Autonomous non-profit organization Institute of the Information Society (www.iis.ru), 1st issue was published in 1998. The journal publishes six issues a year. RDLJ is registered by the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Communications (Roskomnadzor), a certificate of registration see here.

Since 2015 the founder, publisher and distributor of the journal became the Kazan (Volga region) Federal University.
